Periodontitis and Heart Disease

Did you know that periodontitis and heart disease are connected? I didn't know either. I heart about that the bacteria that effect and infect your gums is the same that is located in your heart and develops a heart disease.

But not only the Western Medicine talks about that. One time I went to an acupuncturist and she connected a "lazy spleen" to my gum problems.

It is hard to explain. Imagine that your blood can't clean itself properly and it carries the toxins into your gums with the hope to get rid of them (detox).

But your gums don't detox properly and get infected. Because you don't treat your "lazy spleen" the gums never get rid of their infection and stay red and swollen.

After a while the infected gums create pockets and then starting to "shrink".

I didn't have any clue at this time what was going on but today, I have a pretty good knowledge now what I can do to "spoil" my gums and help them stay healthy.

Gingivitis

After having swollen and infected gums for so many years, my gums developed gingivitis. It was so painful and sad looking in the mirror and seeing my infected, swollen and bleeding gums.

As I still lived in Germany, I went to my dentist every 6 months for a dental cleaning. He always spoke about my Amalgam fillings, and that I would have to remove them soon but never really paid attention to my gums. He said it would go away when I would clean my teeth better.

I moved from Germany to the USA in April 2005. With no dental insurance, I wanted to wait and see how long I could make it without dental cleaning. This was my first big mistake. But I didn't learn from it. Read more in my future postings.

As I visited a local dentist in Miami in May 2006, he told me that I needed a deep dental cleaning. He never spoke about that I have Gingivitis, so I had no clue what happened and why I needed a deep cleaning. I knew that my gums were infected but not why. I asked him and his answer was again that I didn't brush my teeth properly. I got so tired of this answer. Seeing the result of cleaning my teeth and gums wrong but not really knowing what was the reason for it made me crazy.

I went to two deep dental cleaning treatments, and he charged me a huge amount of money but without educating me how I could take care of the Gingivitis (now I know what it was) in the future.

Underestimating what it meant I brushed and flossed my teeth how I was used to and how the dentist showed me but the swollen and bleeding gums still didn't improve.

I got used to it and thought I could live with it.

Swollen Gums

Hi, I am Daggi. I wanted to share my odyssey from swollen gums and having a gum infection over gingivitis to periodontitis.

I am German and live in the USA since 2005. I have swollen and infected gums since I was a teenager.

As I was a child I hated brushing and cleaning my teeth. I felt it was a waste of my time, and often I went to bed without or only with a kind of a minute brush. My dental hygiene wasn't great, not to say horrible.

Being a teenager, everything else was more important. It really didn't bother me so much then. Furthermore, I never saw that it was bad for my teeth. As I was a child my mom brought my sister and me to a dentist who put filings as "prevention" in my healthy teeth.

I had a lot of cavities back then, no wonder with all the chocolate, sugar and sweets I ate.

Since I am a young adult I brush and floss my teeth twice a day. However, the bleeding and swollen gums didn't stop since then. I still have them twenty years later. It always bothered me.

I often feel desperate and that I am the only one who is fighting with it. It looks like everybody else has these wonderful teeth, especially here in the United States.

This is my odyssey of having a "little" gum problem to being one step away from losing my teeth.

Perhaps my blog helps you, and you don't have to go through the same hell as I do now.

Happy teeth and gums!
